Why We All Have a Novel In Us (And What To Do About It). Talk by Kevin Burns at the Catalyst Club in Brighton, Thursday May 10th.

Two further talks in the series "A History of Me" will be held on 9th and 30th June in Brighton.

The Trap- What Happened to our Dream of Freedom? is a 3-part documentary by Adam Curtis. The first episode (summarised in the Wikipedia entry linked here) was on Sunday 11th March. The others will be broadcast at 9PM on the coming Sundays. I think the next episode is going to be about Clinton, Blair and Focus Groups. - K.

The Ramayana opens at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith from this evening until 10 March. I'll be in a position to give a review tomorrow, if anyone wishes.

The Mahabharata is playing at 3.00pm on Sunday afternoons on Radio 4. The 2nd part is this coming Sunday.

I had a lively start to this morning with the weekly Ancient Greek Club at Godolphin and Latymer Girls School. Starting at 8.a.m with a continental breakfast (£1) in the staff-room, we quickly moved on to Oedipus, the Riddle of the Sphinx and the measure between human action and the will of the gods. A tragedy, as we all know. Next week it's Frederic Raphael on Democracy and Drama. No charge.

If anyone is free next Friday in Hammersmith, and would like to attend, just send me an email. The classics teacher also teaches ancient Greek before school on three mornings a week but the Friday cultural session is in English.

Just returned from the Ramayana. Set superb, inventive and magical, a 'hall of mirrors'; music and costumes excellent, also the choreography, especially the fights. One of our party thought the dialogue occasionally weak, and we were agreed that the voices were not as strong as they might be.

But any quibbles were minor. This is a production to see. The drama and its lessons did their work and we left the theatre faith restored, and in good heart.

I'm booked up Laura. Thanks for the tip.

Good to hear this, Kevin. If you want to go to further productions I can get free tickets (as a local resident) for the first night of any play at the Lyric. Just let me know.

The only one that attracts for the immediate future is St George and the Dragon in April. A weaving together of 'myths and legends' with circus artistry.

Part 2 of the Mahabharata yesterday took us to the eve of battle. Next Sunday at 3pm on Radio 4 is the final part.

'Everyone' is seeing the film 'Into Great Silence', a study of the Carthusian monks at Grande Chartreuse. A couple of hours of virtual silence, apart from chanting.

I don't think there are many showings left in London at any rate, and when I booked tickets at Watermans in Brentford for 25 February nearly all the seats had gone.

There's another showing at the Riverside in Hammersmith, and at the Tricycle Centre (NW6, in March.

Saw Into Great Silence yesterday and it's exceptional. Even as a film one experiences the peace and intensity of the quietening of the senses.

Do see it if you haven't already.

Watermans in Brentford is putting on another showing on 1 April, the Riverside (Hammersmith)has it on 14 March, the Tricycle on 3 March, and it's in Hull, Ludlow, Cardiff, Street and Torrington over the next few days and weeks.

You'll need to book.

On www.youtube.com type in Gurdjieff and some interesting stuff comes up, including Tibetan sacred dances. The shaky films featuring Gurdjieff mostly show a splendid moustache getting into a car.

A member of my group, Greg Cooper, is holding a one-day workshop - the Art of Success - based on a 'tried and tested process for setting goals and transforming the way we live'.

It's on 14 April, 9am to 5pm, at Holborn Gate, WC2, cost £20, cheques made payable to the Lucca Leadership Trust. (This is Greg's first venture in this area, hence the 'trial' fee.)

There are various ways of booking a place (and paying for it)but the easiest is to email gregwcooper@hotmail.com.

Well worth supporting and recommending!
