It's become clear to me that we need a new title.
When I started "Free the Teaching!" it perhaps reflected accurately my feelings at the time, following the Inquiry Report and the Channel 4 news piece. On the one hand, the leadership was advocating change, reflection and progress; on the other, there was the sense that some were more concerned with damage limitation. The aggression of our opponents was being returned tit for tat. I was frustrated with this, and I had lost much of my respect for the reactionaries. In short, I wanted to have a go.
Of course, that was not my only motivation. I had also come to believe that our problems were not the result of malignant outside forces, or (even worse) of any shortcomings in the Teaching as we have received it, but of a failure to fully understand that Teaching or put it into practice. So "Free the Teaching" also represents a call for all of us to stop limiting the Teaching with our ideas about it. This was not a woolly or sentimental view - I had some clear ideas about what we had got wrong, and about what needed to be done to put it right. I wanted to test those ideas on others.
Maybe the most important point I wanted to make was that it is time for all of us to take a stand and stop relying on something external to us called "the Teaching". We need to recognise that ahankara is not original sin, but an illusion. There is something called the self, which is what we really are - not just in samadhi or when we reach an imagined Himalaya of the spirit, but what we are here and now, whether or not we know it. The ego distorts things, of course; but its effect is entirely peripheral to the self, and to our essential nature, which is particular to us, but also pure. Our talents, our affections, our deeper impulses and emotions are all routes towards the self (or, if you must, the Self). I'm OK, and you're OK as well. That is what His Holiness is telling us.
What worried me most was to see that there was so much despondency around. Some people were furiously hanging on to their old view of the School; those that had dropped that were, on the whole, losing their faith in it. If we were to procure a Guna-Meter from somewhere (can you get them on mail-order?) I think that the needle would have been pointing towards T and dropping. In order to get back to the S, we had to have some R.
Anyway, maybe that has been done enough. I'd like this blog to retain its edge and bite, where necessary - those are aspects of reason, after all; it has to be a forum for open discussion, where people can express their views freely; but perhaps with a little less heat, and a little more light.
So - we need a new name ... click "comments" below and have a go.

How about 'Free the Teaching'? Sorry if that sounds stroppy, but if this blog is going to become an establishment vehicle then I'm much less interested. There's a time and place for everything. I don't feel inclined to censor myself - or anybody else - except as reason and a smidgin of prudence dictates.
Penetrating the Teaching?
Living the Traching?
Loving the Teaching?
Keeping the Teaching fresh?
Enjoying the Teaching?
Hmm ... I think that is the first time I have been accused of being too 'establishment'.
It must be my age ... as I approach 40, the liberal tendencies of youth fall away and one starts the long march rightwards. (Note to self: cancel subscription to Socialist Worker.)
'Oh, I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.'
Laura, I appreciate your concern, but this is in no danger of becoming an establishment vehicle. To carry on your 'young ones' theme, I think you need to acknowledge our resemblance to three or occasionally four art students in a mini, taking that last freedom ride to nowhere (and we haven't even told our parents when we're getting back!!!)
The School has its problems, but they are the product of ignorance and misunderstanding, which we all share and participate in. Those that represent the 'establishment' are the people who have ended up giving the orders - would we have done better or worse? I'm not sure I would have done better - different mistakes.
My concern is not to be "prolier than thou", but to address these vital issues in the company of as many others as want to share in that. Including you, of course - my comrade of the Wheel-Tappers and Shunters Amalgamated Union.
Well, "Cyber-Satsanga" came to mind. I don't know. I'm really not that bothered. But don't try to de-fine the thing. It's a meeting place, an enquiry. As such the direction and 'identity' should be left as free as possible.
I think 'meeting place' in sanskrit is something like:
samaveta
sam-ava-i
(see Gita Ch1, V1) - but this might need refining by someone with greater punditry.
Actually V, please just take an executive decision on the name. You chose the first one. Arguing about it might be the least intelligent thing that's occurred on this blog. I'm just not keen on anything that assumes a group identity. I reserve the right to disagree with any or all of you, hence I'm not joining any groups, clubs etc! (This is to maintain my general aura of unsociablilty which has taken years to perfect and I have a lot invested in.)
Satsangha? Good name - to take up Kapila's suggestion. Liable to be confused with other satsanghas?
Wheel Tappers and Shunters Amalgamated Union? Brilliant - but will anyone get the words in the right order - or remember it? Brings a smile to the face though!
Squaring the Circle? Just been to the Leonardo exhibition at the V&A, and the great man never managed it - but it was worthwhile and he learnt much along the way.
Other possibilities:
Friends of Philosophy
There Once was a Wise Man...
Is That the Time?
The Philosophical Football Club
The Motley Fool - (except there's a financial site with that name). Still, I like the idea of a Fool to tell a truth.
The Foolish Virgins... now this is getting silly .... see you in the morning.
Kapila,
Point taken. Yes, I agree that I should take the decision.
Your suggestions are helpful though. Cyber-anything is a bit 1990s, it seems to me. Like the idea of a meeting place, but it could also sound a bit cosy ... "Love in the Cottage" ... can any Skt. pundits tell us what "meeting place" would be?
Jeremy,
My feeling on your suggestions is that although they reflect a lot of positive things that one would like the site to represent, they are not quite hitting the spot. The first one is a bit harsh-sounding; the others are all a bit like Mom's Apple Pie ... nothing anyone would disagree with. There is a point to be made about reason, which is that it divides the real from the unreal. The effect of that is to create discomfort if we are attached to the unreal. I think we need to create some discomfort with the unreal. We need to say not only what this is, but more importantly what it isn't - because reason says no.
Laura
WT&SAU probably does capture something of the spirit, if not the right period. Maybe the Fool part is getting somewhere?
Thanks everyone. Any more?
Developing the Fool theme;
The Filosofik Fool
Greetings all,
Some random ideas for a name, mainly to shoot down, open up other possibilities, or jog the mind:
Lokasaabha (world parliament - ie Indian parliament Loksab)
Dialogue
Meeting of Minds
Fellow Travellers (on the Way)
Dialectic Choir
Discovering
Act of Discovery
Philosophic Friends
Its Good to Talk
The Way Forward
Fools Step In
Shots across the Bow
Son of Moses,
Thanks for your suggestions, which are jogging a few thoughts for me. Just thinking aloud here, as it were. Things like "Lokasaabha" or "Meeting of Friends" appeal in one way - clearly that is the need. On the other hand, perhaps it overstates the possibilities of the medium. Maybe a blog is more suited to people putting points of view that they would not express in more buttoned-up environments. In that vein, "Fools step in" or "It's good to talk" seem right, although maybe a little over-jokey? "Shots across the bow" might seem as if we were assuming too much importance for ourselves - that's Samashti's job. A bit like "Free the Teaching!" in fact.
Someone referred to the blog last night as "Kaiwalya" and I quite liked it. Maybe the real name was there all the time. I think has a sense of 'isolation', though ... will dust off the Monier Monier Williams and find out.
Don't like Kailwalya 'cos don't know what it means....
OK Laura.
It means "isolation, perfect unity, detachment from all other connections, detachment of the soul from matter or further transmigrations, beatitude; leading to eternal happiness or emancipation".
I suppose it doesn't suggest a meeting place or community, but it does have connotations of liberation. The isolation aimed at is not, of course, that of a hermit, but an inner isolation of the Self from the not-self.
Perhaps a little other-worldly for a blog? Think I'd prefer something more engaging with a touch of humour...
mmm...kaiwalya with touch of humour:
Hermits Re-United ?
Then we just need webcams, false beards (to maintain anonymity) and a nice mountain scenery backdrop.
Damn, I promised myself I wasn't going to get involved in this discussion any more...
My brother and his friends used to invent unlikely collective nouns. The best one was "a dispersal of hermits".
Or we could adopt the words of my fellow group-member:
Nine philosophers, ten opinions.
Nine Blind Philosophers with Ten Opinions Groping an Elephant with an Exasperated Expression on It's Face?
It's Its, not It's....ooops....a Posse of Pedants.
V's brother is obviously a wizard at this - let him have a go.
A tabula rasa moment - no innate ideas at birth(OED); you may know this already but I've just discovered how to use it.
In other words, a blank sheet. Having re-read the excellent suggestions for a new name it strikes me that everyone comes at this from a different perspective because that's the way we are.
So - if we, er, I mean V - were to choose a very particular name with a particular resonance, then that name in itself might codify the responses.
So my suggestion is a very bland one to which all may subscribe - The Philosophy Blog.
Laura, I can see that you get to like whatever's at the top of the page!
I am still leaning towards "A School for Today and Tomorrow".
Plus obviously Hermits Re-United.
I'd forgotten about the top of the page... must have gone in subterraneously.... only to emerge later. Don't object to the two latest suggestions and especially amused by Hermits Reunited. A School for Today and Tomorrow is slightly portentous.xxxx
A friend of mine was involved with the 'theatre site' at WP, aka The Trenches, and he came up with the concept of "Theatre 2000" (this was in about 1993).
He was accused of being cynical.
Another possibility - The Philosophic Window-Box. It may have resonations with all this talk about the Philosophic Garden.
On the other hand, Hermits Reunited still gets my vote...
